Cryptomeria Japonica Elegans

Cryptomeria Japonica Elegans

Pruned here for over 30 years to take on this cloud form – we have 38 around the garden.  First introduced to this country from Japan by Thomas Lobb in 1854.

Lush green in summer, fading to a beautiful red/brown.  Pruned 2 to 4 times a year depending on growth. The cone specimen that stands to your right as you look at the group demonstrates the different outcome if you decided to trim but not shape the foliage.

Fred’s tip – when young select the branches you wish to keep then prune the rest away.  When you have the shape you want start using a pair of nice topiary shears with 6″ to 8″ blades.
